Wednesday, September 24, 2025

Hey buddy, Got a sec? Just scanned Hacker News from yesterday, Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, and there were some interesting bits.

YouTube Downloads Might Get Tricky

First up, you know yt-dlp, that tool for downloading YouTube videos? Well, it looks like it might start needing something called Deno for some stuff. Sounds like YouTube is making it harder again. People in the comments were saying Deno is actually pretty easy to get, just a single file download, so maybe not too big a deal. One guy even mentioned fighting Google Video back in the day with a 28.8kbps modem, haha, talk about old school!

That Secret Service SIM Farm Story? Probably Fake News

Then there was this big story going around about the Secret Service secretly running a "SIM farm" to spy on people. Turns out, it's probably all bogus. The article broke down why it doesn't make sense, and people were chatting about how easily anonymous sources can lead to misleading stories. Good reminder to always be skeptical!

Google Search is Still a Mess

And speaking of things that are a mess, apparently Google Search is still going downhill. Someone posted an image showing how bad it is with all the ads and irrelevant results. Everyone in the comments was pretty much agreeing it's garbage now, even if they still use it. Makes you wonder if anyone at Google actually uses their own search engine anymore.

Just Let Me Select Text!

This one's a classic annoyance: websites that won't let you select text! There was a whole post about it, and tons of people chimed in with their frustration. Some folks shared little browser tricks or bookmarklets to force text selection, and apparently, on Android, you can even use the "circle to search" feature to grab text from images. Handy, right?

Airlines Want More Money, Less Passenger Rights

Okay, this next one is a bit of a bummer. US airlines like American, Delta, United are apparently pushing to remove passenger protections and add even more fees. Think things like having to pay extra just to sit next to your kids. People were sharing horror stories about being stuck on planes for hours and just generally feeling ripped off. Not cool.

Baldur's Gate 3 is Getting a Native Steam Deck Version

Good news for gamers though! Baldur's Gate 3, that huge RPG, is getting a native Linux version for the Steam Deck. So instead of just running it through Proton (which is basically a compatibility layer), it'll be optimized directly. People were discussing the pros and cons, like how native versions sometimes still have issues, but it's a cool step for Linux gaming.

Small Organizations Are Shrinking

And finally, something a bit more philosophical: a famous mathematician, Terence Tao, was saying that the role of small organizations in society has really shrunk. He thinks big companies and groups are just taking over everything, making it harder for smaller, more flexible groups to make an impact. People were chiming in with examples, like how even volunteer organizations often end up being run by former employees. Makes you think, huh?

Anyway, that's the quick rundown. Catch you later!
