Hey buddy,

Just quickly calling to tell you about some interesting stuff from Hacker News yesterday, Tuesday, September 23, 2025. There was some pretty wild stuff:

Nine things I learned in ninety years

First up, there was this really cool post from an old guy who wrote down nine things he learned in ninety years. It's like, deep wisdom stuff about ego, seeking truth, and being compassionate. People in the comments were really into it, dissecting his points and mostly just agreeing it's some solid life advice.

Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';

Then, dude, there was this super spicy one titled "Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';". It wasn't just about Iran; it really kicked off a huge debate about companies geo-blocking users and data based on location. The comments went wild, even dragging in the whole Iraq WMD controversy, with people arguing whether any were actually found and if the original justification for the invasion was even real. Super intense discussion about ethics and data handling!

Always Invite Anna

You know how sometimes you have that friend who rarely comes out? There was a post called "Always Invite Anna", basically saying you should keep inviting them anyway. A lot of people in the comments agreed, saying it's especially valuable for friends who struggle with depression because even if they decline, they still appreciate being thought of and not forgotten. But then others were like, "nah, if they keep declining, I take the hint; I don't want to pester them!"

Find SF parking cops

Someone actually made an app called "Find SF parking cops" that lets you see where San Francisco parking enforcement officers are! It's pretty controversial. People in the comments were worried about stalkers using it to find officers, which is pretty messed up. But then others argued, "hey, they're public officers, so there shouldn't be an expectation of privacy, and the data is probably public anyway." Wild stuff.

Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover

There's some big drama brewing in the Ruby world. The title claims Shopify is "pulling strings" at Ruby Central, forcing a "takeover" of Bundler and RubyGems. The comments are a total soap opera – some people clarified it was more about one major funder who got mad about DHH's involvement and pulled their money, not Shopify directly controlling things. But then others were straight up saying DHH is using his new board position to "purge" people he politically disagrees with. Crazy stuff for open source!

Libghostty is coming

For the dev nerds, there's a new project called "Libghostty is coming". It's about a new terminal library that sounds like it'll let people build custom terminal apps or embed terminals into other applications. A few folks in the comments were super hyped about it, calling it a potential "game-changer" for flexibility in how we use terminals.

Go has added Valgrind support

And finally, for Go developers, they just added Valgrind support, which is pretty cool for finding memory bugs. But a heads-up from the comments: it's apparently way slower than other tools, like 10 to 100 times slower. Also, someone randomly complained about "passive-aggressive Rust users" in the comments, which was pretty funny and out of left field!

Alright, gotta run! Talk soon!
