Hey buddy, Long time no talk! Just wanted to give you the quick rundown on some interesting stuff from Hacker News today, September 30th. There was a bunch of good chatter, especially around AI and some other cool tech.

Kagi News

First up, Kagi, that paid search engine, was in the news. Folks are saying they pay for it because it actually gives way better results, and they're trying to figure out how to fight fake news. One guy in the comments has been paying for three years and loves the precise results. Someone else brought up a good point: saying 'just be media literate' is easier said than done when the whole system is designed for clicks and fake news. Check it out here: Kagi News

Sora 2

Then there's Sora 2 from OpenAI, their video AI thing. Everyone's talking about it. Is it real art or just endless content, kinda like TikTok? Someone in the comments was pretty sarcastic, saying how AI is supposed to free us from boring jobs, but so far it's mostly created stuff like Uber drivers and AI data labelers. Another person even brought up old philosophers to debate if AI-made pop culture has any real value. Wild stuff. Here's the link: Sora 2

Goodbye Disqus

Someone posted about dumping Disqus, the comment system, from their blog. Said it was making his site worse. A lot of people in the comments totally agreed, saying ads just trash the user experience. Someone even plugged their own alternative, Talkyard, which sounds kinda like Disqus but hopefully better. And yeah, GitHub comments can be tricky with all the permissions they ask for. You can read the full rant here: I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse

Comprehension Debt in AI Code

There was a cool article talking about 'comprehension debt' with AI-generated code. Basically, it's code that works, but is a nightmare to understand later. People are worried that bosses expect AI to just magically make everything faster, and won't listen if it causes problems down the line. One smart comment said that it's like a calculator – it only works well if you know how to use it right, especially with good prompts for the AI. Food for thought: Comprehension debt: A ticking time bomb of LLM-generated code

Inflammation and Heart Disease

Big health news: apparently, inflammation is now a stronger predictor for heart disease than cholesterol! Blew my mind a little. The comments were deep, talking about how 'bad cholesterol' (LDL) isn't just one thing, but has different types, and how avoiding things that cause inflammation, like air pollution and microplastics, is super hard for most people. Definitely worth a read: Inflammation now predicts heart disease more strongly than cholesterol

Imgur Exits UK

Remember Imgur? The image hosting site? They just pulled out of the UK because some data watchdog was threatening fines. Sounds like it's about data rules or maybe child safety stuff. This really got people talking in the comments – a big debate about whether kids should even be on the internet. Some were like, 'blame the parents, the internet's not for children!' and others were like, 'come on, it's like learning to cross the street, kids need to learn how to be safe online!' Crazy discussion. Story here: Imgur pulls out of UK as data watchdog threatens fine

Apple M5 Leaks

And finally, some Apple news: leaked benchmarks for the new M5 chip are out. People are always complaining that Apple artificially limits what their hardware can do. Also, a lot of folks in the comments are bummed about not having good alternative operating systems for these powerful ARM chips, saying macOS is too locked down. But hey, there's hope for an ARM-based Steam Deck, which would be pretty cool for games! Check the scores: Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores

Alright, gotta run! Catch you later!
