Man, you gotta hear what was blowin' up Hacker News today, August 7th. It was a wild mix, as usual. Grab a coffee, this'll be quick.
GPT-5 Dropped!
First off, the big news everyone's talking about: GPT-5 is officially out. Like, finally! People were pretty hyped, but also some folks in the comments were already complaining about OpenAI's naming conventions, like calling it "5" when they had "4o" and "3" before. Apparently, it's just confusing for the average user. Classic tech company marketing, right?
Email Codes Are Worse Than Passwords?
Then there was this super interesting post arguing that emailing a one-time code for login is actually worse than just using passwords. Wild, right? The comments were buzzing about it. One surprising thing someone pointed out was that apparently, according to research, grandmas are actually *less* likely to fall for online scams than 18-29 year olds. Blew my mind! So maybe don't worry about your granny's security as much as your little cousin's.
GPT-5 for Devs & a Surprise
Back to GPT-5 for a sec. There was another post specifically about GPT-5 for developers. But here’s the kicker: one dude in the comments tested it by asking it to code a 3D snake game, and his take was, "Sample size of 1 but GPT-5 seems horrendous at coding?" Haha, talk about a reality check right out the gate! Hopefully, it's just a specific niche, or it needs more hand-holding.
Flipper Zero Security Flaw
Okay, this next one is kinda scary. Apparently, some dark web firmware for the Flipper Zero can bypass rolling code security for things like car keys and garage door openers. Yikes! Someone in the comments was like, "Rolling codes were specifically created to prevent replay attacks, and then they somehow thought 'oh but if you replay *two* keys we'll accept them'". Sounds like a classic security oversight, huh?
Historical Tech Tree
On a lighter note, there was a cool link to a "Historical Tech Tree" website. It's basically a cool visual timeline of inventions. People in the comments were having fun debating stuff like how candles were invented, and one guy even said, "Wine is much easier than beer, because ripe fruit will ferment on it's own. Even wild animals get drunk sometimes; it's sometimes said that wine was discovered but beer was invented." Made me chuckle.
Windows XP on the Web
And for a blast from the past, someone put up a link to Windows XP Professional that runs right in your browser. How cool is that for nostalgia? A bunch of comments immediately started talking about how Windows XP (and other OSes) used to have "fake progress bars" that weren't real, just there to make you feel like something was happening. Good times, good times.
OpenAI's Million Dollar Bonuses
Finally, and this one's a jaw-dropper: there was a story claiming OpenAI is giving every employee a $1.5 million bonus. Can you even imagine?! One person in the comments did the math, like, "No, due to the way taxes work, I'd have to: A) Find a way to work in OpenAI before I knew there'd be a $1.5M bonus... B) Find a way to avoid taxes... C) Do this twice before I'd get my 28 years back..." Pretty sure everyone's updating their LinkedIn profiles after hearing that one!
Alright, that's the quick download for today. Catch ya later!
