Hey buddy,

Quick call, just saw some interesting stuff on Hacker News today, thought I'd give you the heads-up.

Claude 4

So, big news, Anthropic dropped Claude 4. Everyone's buzzing about it. Someone in the comments was saying it's kinda like how brains dream when it's trying to figure stuff out, which is pretty wild. But yeah, lots of talk about whether these big AI companies can actually make money doing this, and some folks are still worried about the models saying weird or offensive stuff, even if they're small.

Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot

Okay, bummer news: Mozilla is killing off Pocket and Fakespot. People are kinda annoyed, especially since they bought Pocket years ago. The comments were debating if it's because of some legal risk with storing articles or maybe just because Mozilla isn't great at running these things. Someone recommended a local alternative called SingleFile if you use Pocket.

Gemini Diffusion

Saw a post from Simon Willison about something called Gemini Diffusion. It's another AI thing, but seems like a different way to generate text compared to the usual models. The idea is it might be better for running on your own computer, which would be cool.

Trump administration halts Harvard's ability to enroll international students

Alright, this one was pretty hot. The Trump administration apparently stopped Harvard from enrolling new international students. The comments section is... well, it's what you'd expect. People are talking about some report that came out about issues on campus and also just rehashing political arguments. Lots of concern about how it messes things up for students and research fields that rely on international talent.

The scientific “unit” we call the decibel

Here's a nerdy one I thought was cool: someone wrote about how decibels are kinda weird mathematically. The article calls them "ridiculous." The comments got into a whole thing about different units, like how computer storage is marketed vs. the actual binary size, and someone wished we used base-12 instead of base-10 for measurements. Wild.

That fractal that's been up on my wall for years

Someone shared a neat personal project about a fractal he had on his wall for years and finally figured out the math behind it. Turns out it connects to base-5 numbers and how the fractal grows. Pretty cool story about finally solving a long-standing puzzle just hanging there.

Planetfall

Last one, saw a post titled Planetfall and it was about the old game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Brought back memories for a lot of people in the comments. They were talking about how deep and influential that game was. Someone even recommended a show called "Scavengers Reign" saying it has a similar vibe.

Anyway, that's the main stuff. Catch you later!
