HN Buddy Daily Digest
Thursday, May 1, 2025
Hey buddy,
Man, you won't believe the stuff popping off on Hacker News today. Just wanted to give you the quick rundown while I remember. It's May 1st, Thursday, you know?
Redis is Open Source Again
Okay, so get this, Redis is back to being fully open source. Remember all that drama with the license change? The guy who created it, antirez, wrote about it. Sounds like they had some weird internal stuff going on, maybe with legal folks, that led to the stricter license before. Now they've switched to a different open source one. People in the comments were debating if the old license really hurt adoption anyway, but it's cool to see it go back.
Apple's in Hot Water (Again)
Big news about Apple. A judge apparently found they violated some antitrust ruling. And get this, in a related story, the judge even said an Apple exec lied under oath and is sending it to the feds for criminal contempt! Yikes. People were talking about how Apple's internal emails got used against them, and how they make it hard for other payment systems or even just web apps to do certain things like use NFC on iPhones. Someone even brought up alternative app stores like F-Droid.
Microsoft Office Loading at Startup
This one's kinda funny but also annoying. Microsoft's apparently going to start loading Office when Windows starts up because it's too slow otherwise. Seriously? Instead of making it faster, they just want it always running in the background. Comments had people complaining about how bloated Office is, and some joking about other software they wish would just load instantly.
Claude AI Gets Integrations
Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, announced new ways to integrate Claude with other tools. Like, connecting it to do stuff outside of just chatting. People in the comments are using these big AIs for all sorts of things, from scoping out complicated projects to helping with weird, niche programming problems that you can't even Google. But yeah, still need a human to double-check things, apparently.
No More Paywalls for NIH Research (Soon)
Good news for science nerds! Starting July 1st, you won't have to hit a paywall for research funded by the NIH. The government agency basically said publishers can't keep it locked up anymore. People in the comments were pointing out how crazy the current system is, where taxpayers pay for the research, then universities pay to publish it, and then everyone has to pay again to read it. Makes sense to open it up.
May Day History & Discussion
Since it's May 1st, there were a couple of posts about International Workers' Day and its origins. It's tied back to worker movements and protests in the US way back. The discussion got pretty deep into labor history, unions, and how things are different now compared to the industrial revolution days. Lots of different takes on unions today, especially in tech.
Spotting North Korean Hackers Applying for Jobs
This was wild. A security company wrote about how they identified a North Korean hacker trying to get a job with them. And there was another article about an interview question trick to spot fake workers, apparently including ones from NK. The trick is asking super basic questions about common tech protocols or workflows that a real developer would know instantly, but a fake might struggle with. Comments were debating if that kind of trick actually works or if it's easy to fake. Someone even joked about asking how fat Kim Jong Un is, which is apparently a risky question over there.
Anyway, that's the main stuff. Lots of interesting things happening. Talk soon!
